| Amazon.co.uk ReviewWhether or not Native Americans appreciate late 20th century Hollywood apologising for stealing their land, Disney's intentions seem to be well meaning. Whether or not the subject matter was responsible in part for it being less of a hit than those before and after, Disney's animation and dabbling in CGI gave it a terrific look. Whether or not it was about time someone else won an Oscar, Alan Menken's score is remarkably rich, with only the barest of "Indian" flavouring and a distinct lack of anything "cowboy". "The Virginia Company" is a Yankee pride march that paves the way for "Savages" to thump out the drums of war at a politically incorrect ethic. "Just Around The Riverbend" is the strongest number, eloquently exploring the possibilities of life. There's also a neat habit of splitting material into two parts, making for a song and score separation that works to the material's advantage. "Listen With Your Heart I" and "II" have some very nice native American backing but in measured doses of sweet and dark. In the extended score suite Menken delivers some adventurous orchestral pieces, with "Skirmish" whipping up a memorable cavalry charge. Whether or not you can stomach it, historical Disney is still Disney. --Paul Tonks
